Paddle Board Care and Maintenance

You're going to love your new GILI board, and we want to protect your investment for many years to come. Our inflatable boards are constructed from military grade PVC material and will hold up to most abuse, but certain environments can be hard on any item over extended periods of time, especially saltwater and direct sunlight. Our boards are made to be enjoyed outdoors, so here are some guidelines for your board when it's not in use.

Before inflating and using your GILI Paddle Board read these instructions and safety warnings.

LIMIT EXPOSURE OF DECK SIDE TO DIRECT SUNLIGHT

Excessive sun exposure can potentially damage the non-slip traction pad of your board. When in use, the water has a cooling effect on the traction pad and helps regulate the surface temperature. When the traction pad is dry, heat absorption is amplified when exposed to direct sunlight. If you must expose your board to direct sunlight during transport or temporary storage, it is safest to keep the bottom of your board facing up and release some pressure from your SUP by pressing down on the air valve for a few seconds to release some air from the board.

RULES TO AVOID DAMAGE FROM HEAT

When you aren't using your board, never leave the board exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods of time.
Keep your board in a shaded area when not in use.
Never leave the deck pad of your board exposed to the sun when not in use.
Release some pressure from your board with the air valve while your board is not in use and out of the water.

RINSE YOUR BOARD WITH FRESH WATER AFTER USE

Dirt, sand, sun and saltwater will degrade any human made material over time. Rinse off any dirt, mud, sand and salt deposits with fresh water. When your board is completely dry, store in a cool, dry environment.

WARNING : Damage due to overheating is not covered by the manufacturer warranty.

Inflating and Deflating Your Board

Dual pump with a knob

When inflating, start with the dial on Setting "1". This is the highest volume setting. Inflate the board until it becomes difficult to pump, and switch the dial to Setting "2". This is the mid range setting. When pumping gets difficult again, use the last Setting "3" to finish inflating the board from 14 to 18 PSI.

Paddle board pump hole

  1. Locate and remove the valve cover on your SUP. Press down on the valve pin and turn counter-clockwise until the valve pin is locked in the UP position.
  2. Insert pump hose adapter into valve. Secure pump hose into valve by turning clockwise. Inflate until you reach 14-18 PSI. Once inflated to your desired PSI, remove pump hose from valve. If air releases from valve, the valve pin is not in the upright position and will not hold air. With valve pin in the correct position, air will not release from the SUP.
  3. Place valve cover back in place and lock.

There is no way to over-inflate or damage your board using the GILI hand pump. Even though your board may look and feel rigid, pump your board up to the recommended pressure of 14-18 PSI. The closer you get to the recommended pressure the more resistance you will feel when pumping.

Board Deflation

When you are deflating your board, clear any water, sand, dirt and debris out of the valve areas. Slowly, push down on the valve pin, and turn clockwise until the pin is locked in the DOWN position. There will be a loud, initial burst of air which will slow down very quickly. When your board is completely deflated, make sure the valve pin is in the closed (UP) position by turning the valve pin counter-clockwise and the valve pops up. Remove the fins before you roll up your board.

Fins Installation

Fins installation

  1. Insert front of fins into opening at the front of the fin boxes
  2. Make sure fin tabs are in the middle position before inserting
  3. Push the fins down until fully seated in the fin box. Apply pressure if needed (especially for the center fin which is a firm fit)
  4. Secure the fins in place by pushing the fin lock tabs down

Experiment with different fin setups: Meno series boards come with 3 main fins: 9" Race fin, 4.5" Speed fin and a 3" River fin. The side fin aid in turning and maneuvering, but remove them if paddling in shallow water.

Storing Your Board

Our boards are constructed with strong PVC to provide protection from ultraviolet light. Store your board where it will not be exposed to weather and direct sunlight.

  1. Fully deflate your board and remove the center fin and side fins
  2. Clean and check your board after each use. Rinse your board with fresh water thoroughly. Remove any sand, dirt, or saltwater build up. Use a mild soap if needed, and avoid any heavy chemical based products. Make sure your board is completely dry before storage.
  3. Roll your board from nose to tail. Leave the inflation valve cap off when rolling. Once the board is fully rolled up, be sure the valve pin is in the UP position and place the valve cap back on. Secure the board strap around your board.
  4. When storing your board, keep it in a clean and dry place out of the elements and away from major temperature changes. Do not store your board outdoors for long periods of time, or in the temperature below 32°F or above 90°F.

Adjustable Travel Paddle

Paddle Assembly

Carbon fiber paddle

For travel and carrying, the paddle can be separated into 3 smaller sections.

When putting sections together, make sure paddle clasps are open. Once assembled, close clasps to lock in place. If paddle shafts still move, twist, or slide up and down, the clasps need to be tightened until secure. Use a Philips screwdriver to tighten.

Be careful not to pinch fingers when connecting the paddle shafts.

WARNING : RINSE PADDLE WITH FRESH WATER AFTER EVERY USE. REMOVE UPPER SHAFT TO DRY.

Repair Kit Information

GILI repair kit

You'll find a repair kit with the SUP for small tears and/or leaks. Also includes a valve wrench for tightening the high pressure inflation valve.

Note: If you need repair glue, contact us and we will send you the glue free of charge.

Directions for Valve Wrench Use

(Use only when SUP is completely deflated)

The valve wrench should only be used if your air valve is leaking air.

ONLY use to tighten by turning clockwise. Use a reasonable amount of force. Only tighten the valve when the board is completely deflated. Valve wrench should NEVER be used to deflate the board. Improper Use of this tool will void the warranty and could cause serious injury.

WARNING : NEVER USE THE VALVE WRENCH TO DEFLATE YOUR BOARD OR WHEN YOUR BOARD IS INFLATED. IT CAN CAUSE BODILY HARM AND WILL VOID YOUR BOARD WARRANTY.

Directions For Repair Kit Use

  1. Completely deflate the paddle board.
  2. Thoroughly clean the surface around the leak and the matte side of the patch with rubbing alcohol. Both surfaces must be free of moisture, dirt, oil, and debris.
  3. Apply glue carefully and evenly to both the paddle board surface and matte side of the patch.
  4. Apply thin layer around edge of patch to seal patch to the board.
  5. Allow glue to dry for minimum of 24 hours before using the board.

Leash Installation

Always wear a PFD when riding your SUP. In addition, use your ankle leash unless riding in shallow, rocky rivers. Before paddling, attach your SUP leash to your board, following the instructions below. Remove your leash after you've finished paddling to prevent snagging. Wrapping your leash around the board and fins can result in damage to the leash.

Step by step instruction on how to install leash

  1. Push the Leash Loop through the tail D-ring
  2. Push the Leash Loop back through knot Loop
  3. Pull up tightly to secure leash loop to D-ring
  4. Open the Velcro cuff. Pull cuff through leash loop
  5. Fold over Velcro cuff and tabs to over leash loop. Press firmly to secure the leash in
  6. Leash installation complete
